FORM OF WANGANUI
“The form of Wanganui city is an interesting study in itself. It has so obviously adjusted itself to its valley bottom site as it grew, it has just sprawled all over the valley door just like a kind of growing octopus. From your trunk railway i way station at Aram oho, to your outport area at Castlecliff, it is eight i or more miles, but the commercial 1 core of the city clusters along Victoria Avenue and the town bridge. “I suppose the building of the bridge did more than anything else \ to pin Victoria Avenue as the main shopping street, while the growth of warehousing and industrial business along the river port would reflect I the former importance of the river as the one way of access to the in--1 terior.” \ So said Dr. G. Jobberns, ! professor of geography, Canterbury University College, speaking in Wanganui recently.
