AGRICULTURAL CLUB

WANGANUI MAIN TRUNK DIVISIONS JUDGE’S REPORT AND LIST OF AWARDS Following is the annual report and list of awards of the Boys' and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs (Wanganui Education District) for the 1945-46 season:— It is pleasing, in presenting this review of operations, to be able to state that the year's work was entirely satisfactory. Competing schools were drawn from the area of which Manunui, Tokaanu, Parewanui and Manutahi are the extremes. The work flourishes in most of the country schools in the district (board and native) and the ready co-operation of the teachers and parents is a feature of the work. Completed projects for the year were as follows:—Animal reared, 541; plots judged, .457; total, 998. When the figures from the Mana-watu-Oroua Division are added to the above, the district total reached 2047. These figures constitute a record for the board's area and are an indication of the increasing interest tn the club movement and perhaps, of the benefits of the work to the rising generation. Ten years ago the completed project in the board's district were 855. PLOT PROJECTS. Detailed results of the competitions in the various schools are presented The season was a difficult one. The sowing period was wet and the dry spell, early in the current year, militated against the successful development ot the crops. Notwithstanding the adverse circumstances, where cultivation was regular and thorough, splendid results were obtained. Carrot aphis was prevalent throughout the district and the children’s notes told ot many struggles with that pest as well as with others. The note books, in general, were good and many were faithful records of operations, observations and general details. The educational value of these competitions is, undoubtedly, considerable. There is an insistent demand for a reduction in the size, of the plots and this matter will be considered by delegates at the annual meeting. Much of the judging was done by local residents who gave excellent services and are thanaed for thenassistance to the movement. CALF CLUBS. Judging was done during late November ana December. Al most schools visited, local residents turned out in force and there was ample evidence of great interest in these competitions. Calves were judged in two classes: —(a) Care and attention; (b> dairy type, but older animals were judged tor type only. The following gentlemen, by acting as judges at the various scnoois, gave splendid assistance io the movement: —Messrs. C. J. Masters, L. K. Monk, J. J. Robb, R. V. Brown, J. K. Lumsl den, J. H. Mason and C. Howe. The I assistance of Mr. R. Syme and judges l irom Hawera, etc., in the Waverleyi patea areas are also gratefully I acknowledged. 1 It is recommended that the comI petitions during 1946-47 be continued i under the rules of the past season and .nat consideration be given to the part -hat leading should play in maKing awards for care and attention. GENERAL. The active support of lite committees at Ohakune, Talhape and Wanganui is acknowledged with thanks. Members have the satistaction ot knowing that their efforts have been crowned with success. Financial support was accorded by the under-mentioned, whose assistance has been a material aid in the development of the work amongst the rising generation: N.Z. Farmers’ Union, Wanganui A. and P. Association, Rangitikei County Council, Dairy Companies (Wangaehu, Kai Iwi, Okoia, Waverley, Kohi, Rata, Raetihi). The help of the Press in matters ol publicity is also acknowledged. PATEA SCHOOL. 1.
