AMATEUR CYCLING

H. HODSON WINS GRUELLING RACE A 10-mile course from the Red Lion Inn, round the Kaimatira block to the finish at the Red Lion, was covered by members of the Wanganui Amateur Cycling Club on Saturday last. Twelve riders took part in what is considered one o£ the toughest tests of the season. The limit riders, Harrison, Beswarick, Anderson, Laidlaw and Taylor, teamed well together. Laidlaw had bad luck, his wheel pulling over after going 2i miles. This bunch stayed together till about threequarters of a mile from home, where they were caught by Hodson and Cheatley. From there they sorted out their positions, and in the sprint home Hodson beat Harrison, closely followed by Beswarick and Cheatley. Shepherd gained fastest time, which was only Ifeec. off the course record. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if his comarker. Philpot, had been able to compete. Results: H. Hodson (2.30) 1, G. Harrison (3.10) 2, W. Beswarick (3.10) 3, D. Cheatley 4.

Fastest times: K. Stephens (22mm. sGsec.) 1. A. Higgs (23min. 25 l-ssec.» 2. W. Pidwell (23min. 47sec.) 3.

Eight riders turned out for the Sunday morning training ride over a distance of 20 miles. The club captain would appreciate it. if more members turned out for these training rides.
