WESTERN GOLF 10,000DOLLAR TITLE
BEN HOGAN (TEXAS) WINS. Recd. 8 p.m. Washington, May 27. The 10,000-dollar Western open tournament was won by the tiny Texan, Ben Hogan, who conquered influenza and turned in a record 271. two strokes ahead of the previous record, and winning his first traditional open. Hogan now has six 1946 titles and his year's earnings total more than 20,000 dollars, nearly double the cash of the runner-up, Byron Nelson. Mangrum was second with 275. Jim Demaret and Chick Herbert tied for tiprd with 278. Ferrier crashed over the last 36 holes and finished seventh.
