SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Miss F. Pyle, who has been spending the school vacation al her home in Wanganui, returned to Auckland during the week-end. Mrs. W. A. Izard and Miss Grace Izard, College Street, who have been visiting AucKland, left the northern city last Wednesday for Rotorua on their return to Wanganui. Miss M. E. Baker, principal of the Girls’ College, has returned to Wanganui alter attending the secondary school conference in Wellington, followed by a visit to New Plymouth. While in Wellington, Miss Baker was entertained at a party given by the old girls’ branch, of which Mrs. Gibbons is president and Miss Joyce Atkinson the secretary. 'There were about 40 present. Madame Betts Vincent, of Wellington, formerly musical directress of tne Wanganui College, contributed pianoforte solos, and Miss Gladys Tonkin, whose home is in Wanganui, gave two elocutionary items. Among those present was Miss Margaret (Pearl) Jennings, who has returned to New Zealand after 20 years in China. Miss Jennings is an old girl of the Wanganui 'College and was at boarding school.
ENGAGEMENT
Meyer— Hammer.— Mr. and Mrs. F. Hammer wish to announce the engagement of their younger daughter Cecily Maude, to Eric Herbert Meyer, youngest son o; Mr. and the late Mrs. A. Meyer, Orautaha.
WEDDING CAMPBELL—FITCHES At. St. George's Church, Turakina, the marriage took place on April 27 ot Evelyn Mavis, daughter of Mrs. FT*N. Fitches and the late Mr. J. Fitches, Turakina, and Leslie Walter, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Campbell, of Marton. The Rev. Nigel Williams officiated and Miss M. Marshall presided at the organ.
The bride, who was escorted Uy her brother, Mr. G. S. Fitches, wore a gown of ivory embossed silk cloque fashioned with shirred bodice, heartshaped neckline and skirt forming a full train. A V-shaped cap of nerines held in place the veil of embroidered tulle. Her bouquet consisted of nerines, chrysanthemums and water-lilies.
In attendance were the bride’s sister, Mrs. R. Calvert, of Cambridge, as matron of honour, and Miss D. Cox, of Wanganui, as bridesmaid. 'Their frocks of scarlet self-patterned cloque had tight-fitting bodices gathered to one side and full gathered skirts with slight trains. They wore small hats of similar cloque finished with top-knots of real flowers and they carried bouquets of deep lemon chrysanthemums, roses and freezias. Mr. H. Norwell, of Hastings, was best man, and the bridegroom’s brother, Mr. Ken Campbell, of Marton, was groomsman. The ushers were Mr. N. Langstone and Mr. R. 'Pod (Marton). The bride was piped into church by Mr. John Grant.
Autumn-tinted leaves and flowers decorated the 'Kurakina Hall for the reception held after the ceremony. To receive the guests, Mrs. Fitches wore a frock of black crepe romaine with beaded flowers on the yoke, black hat trimmed with a veil and pale cyclamen feathers, and a shoulder spray of cyclamen carnations and nerines. She was assisted by the bridegroom’s mother, who was wearing a navy embroidered ensemble with touches of white, a smart navy hat and silver fox furs. She held a posy of deep red roses.
For travelling, the bride wore a brown wool repp ensemble embroidered with flower motifs to match her tailored pillar-box red blouse, a brown veiled tooue trimmed with brown and red feathers, and accessories to tone. Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Campbell will reside in Marton.
