CONCRETE INSTEAD OF ASPHALT
SURFACING SCHOOL GROUNDS
“I am very pleased that the new architect has introduced a policy of laying concrete rather than asphalt, for asphalt is not so satisfactory,’’ stated Mr. N. Bromily, at Tuesday’s meeting of the Wanganui Education Board.
The architect, Mr. L. S. Barsanti, explained the object was to cut down on maintenance costs, which had proved very high for asphalt. Although the cement shortage may hold up the work, the board agreed to the request of the Maxwell school committee for concreting of the basketball court and a 20ft strip around the school. The committee has raised approximately £lOO for this work, and the board is to seek a departmental subsidy for the remainder of the expenditure and above the grant the board is to make and the amount the committee has on hand. Similar work is to be undertaken the Owhanga School, when the cement is available. The committee has raised £5O towards this end
