MARTON NOTES
HARRIERS’ CLUB NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By "Stayer.”) Now that the Marton Club has held two races, one is able to comment on runners and their performances. A notable feature of Saturday’s. race—the first for the Todd Cup—was the way youth prevailed over the old timers, the first four places being tilled by post-war runners and the last four by the old pre-war runners. A pleasing increase in attendance over the last two weeks speaks well for the rest of the season, but there are still too many ex-runners just spectators. “Stayer” suggests that they would help the club more by donning their old maroon singlets. A reminder to some of the starters last week regarding colour of singlets. A "rainbow” would, I think, aptly describe those in use. The winner of the first Todd Cup race, J. Le Fuevre, ran a splendid race in second fastest time. He shows good judgment of distance and will soon be showing S. Robertson a thing or two. His win was especially meritorious in that he had cycled 18 miles from Flock House to compete. S. Robertson, finished second and incidentally made fastest time in both runs. Stan shows promise for championship races later on. T. Rivers, filled third place, a few yards ahead of a new junior, V. Simcox, who ran a good race for a school-boy, but was unlucky to get a bleeding nose. Both runners will no doubt improve with a few more runs. M. Griffin, fifth, was six seconds slower than Le Fuevre, but half-a-minute faster than his time for the same course the previous week. Griff loks as though he will regain his old pace and should bid fair to representative honours. “Stayer” is pleased to see Griff, back again, also F. Hill and S. Christopher who are both taking their running easy as yet. Steve ran a good race in the sealed handicap, but was a bit slower on Saturday. He was second in the sealed handicap, one second behind J. Taylor, who also ran well to win the first race of the season. Frank Hill is as yet content to take things easy, but will no doubt be sharing the scratch mark again soon. The most pleasing feature of all, both this season and last, is the way the lady supporters of the club have rallied round to provide afternoon tea each Saturday. “Stayer” is sure that this is what has kept the club so popular especially among' visiting runners.
