OUTBREAK OF FIRE CAUSES EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO CHURCH

The altar, wall and ceiling of St. Vincents Catholic Church, Cornfoot Street, Castlecliff, were badly damaged by an outbreak of fire late on Monday night. Two machines, one from Central Station and another from the Castlecliff sub-station, responded to a call received over the street alarm system. The fire was first noticed by Mr. M. D. Evetts, of Cornfoot Street, Castlecliff. He was passing the church when he saw a distinct glow in the vicinity of the altar. At first he discounted the possibility of a fire in the church, but after a closer investigation he called the brigade. Superintendent N. M. Ross was In charge of the two machines which responded to the call. The brigade used 300 feet of hose and soon had the fire under control. The parish priest, Rev. Father M. J. Burke, S.M., said yesterday that in spite of extensive damage being done to the church, Mass would be celebrated there next Sunday morning.
