Easter Racing Fixtures:: By ‘Kestrel’

Eastei' Monday racing yesterday was marked by some surprises, lint the .feature was an easy win lor Master Dash, under 11.12, in the Great Easter at Ricearton, where lilue Trout won the Champagne Stakes and Al-Sirat the Sockburn Handicap. Severity won the Feilding Cup and Cowper scored at double figures in the Nolan Handicap, principal event at Ellerslie, where Balgowan won the St. I.eger. Capronella won the Waipuknra Cup and Miss Delaware the main race at Tauherenikau, while Joygiver scored in the principal event zt Riverton. Rain caused a big slump in the totalisator turnover at Ellierslie and Rotorua, in marked contrast to the fine weather experienced elsewhere.

FEILDING CUP TO SEVERITY

SPRINT WON BY DEPRIVE MAKINO TO DERRYOGUE The Waverley-owned but Martontrained Severity proved her staying ability yesterday when she came at the right end to win the Feilding Cup, principal event on the second day of ihe Feilding Jockey Club's Easter meeting. Improved by his race on the opening dav. Deprive won the open sprint, the 'Denbigh Handicap. The Oroua Hack Cup was won by the Hawera-trained Greek Chief, and the Makino Handicap went to the Wan-ganui-owned Derryogue. The weather was dull but fine and the track was in good order, though still slow. There was a large attendance and the totalisator handled £68.855 10s, compared with £57,101 10s on Easter Monday last year, making the total £135,474, as against £117,559 for the two days last year, an increase of £17,915. Langue d’Or was at a short price in the Feilding Cup, with Severity carrying only a quarter of the win support accorded the favourite. Master Ted made the running from Rink and Financial in the early stages but half a mile from home Langue d’Or was taken up to Master Ted and Severity was only a length further back, with Financial next. Once in line for the judge. Severity asserted her claim and ran past the leaders to win by Two and a-half lengths. Langue d’Or hung on to beat Master Ted by a short neck for second place, with Financial a fair fourth. DEPRIVE IMPROVES Deprive was kept under restraint in the Denbigh Handicap until the straight was reached and then came away strongly. New Deer was squeezed out at the start and when they had settled down Royal Greek. Flying Orders and Gaymeer led from DeDrive. Poutatin moved up at the half-mile, where Gaymeer had taken over, and the pair turned for home ahead of Autoscore, Flving Orders and Deprive, The latter came through in the straight to win by a length and a-quarter from Poutatau, with Autoscore half a length back. Gaymeer was a close fourth and New Deer next. Gay Si.roll er was backed down to a short price for the Makino Handicap, but failed to gain a placing, Derryogue winning in a close finish from the outsider, Broiefort Star. After Treasure Tee and Tremello had made the pace, Broiefort Star and Derryogue led across the top from Silver Pal, Gay Stroller and Tremello. Derryogue was clear into Ihe straight but Broiefort Star joined issue and just failed by a nose. Two and a-half lengths back was Silver Pa], just, ahead of the fast-finis’ling Alethca, with Tremello and Gay Stroller several lengths back. Foreign Coin waited on the early leaders in the Kimbolton Hurdles till they had gone six furlongs and then ran to ihe front to lead Tid-Apa, Te Ruru, First King and Lady Premier at the half-mile, where Royal Musgo

broke down and was pulled up. Foreign Coin came on to win b}/ two lengths from Tid Apa, with ” Gold Claim finishing strongly, four lengths further back.

Cleo came from well back to win the Waiata Stakes after Pellmeer and Lord Victor had made the pace. Homespun finished better than Supreme to return nearly a score for a place, and Silver Wedding was close up to the dividend-payers. Dymondy had an easy win in the Awahuri Handicap, taking over the lead crossing the top to show the way into the straight to Gay Slipper, Step Far and II Corona. In the run to the judge, Dymondy came away to win by four lengths, with Gay Slipper a neck in front of Step Far and Tula only half a head away.

The Hawera-trained Greek Chief snrang a mild surprise in the Oroua Hack Cup, overtaking the leaders, General Menteith, Gynerio, Sailor Boy. Mary Jo and Swift Jay, in ihe straight and winning by just over a length. Swift Jay and Sailor Boy dead-heated for second, just in front of the rank outsider, Man’s Pride. Mary Jo and were next to finish. A GOOD DIVIDEND A great finish was provided in Ihe Rewa Hack Handicap, half the field being spread across the track at the half-distance. In the last fifty yards Lady Merit just managed to get her nose in front of Moutoa Lord (rather unlucky), with Gold Shoes only a nose away and Dutch Mary almost in line. Right up with them were Hadrian, Rockanui, and Royal Pilot. 'The winner returned nearly a third of a century.
