N.Z.E.F. RUGBY TEAM IN BRITAIN
PLAYERS IN A TOURNAMENT FOR A HOSPITAL (N.Z.E.F. Official Correspondent.) Recd. 6 p.m. London, April 21. Since their tour ended, members of the N.Z.E.F. Rugby team have been spending leave with friends met on the tour in various parts of Britain, and several have been guest players in English Rugby teams. Yesterday, Saxton, Smith, Allen, Argus, Blake. Simpson, and McPhail entered a Middlesex Rugby Union tournament to raise funds for the Middlesex Hospital for cancer research. They won all three games In the first day’s play, scoring 26 to nil, 26 to nil, and 24 to nil, and delighting spectators with very clever exhibl-
I lions, in which Smith and Allen were brilliant. Smith, who did the goal 'kicking, scored 40 points. The team’s condition was completely spent before the end of the last game. The last three rounds will be played at Twickenham on Saturday, when much harder opposition will be met from seeded teams who did not play yesterday. The Kiwis, who are playing only to help the hospital funds, ! expressed a desire to play from the start of the tournament. P. K. Rhind will go into hospital this week for treatment for a displaced vertebrae which is affecting his right arm and which was apparently caused by a bump received on the tour of the Continent. It is believed a few days’ treatment will correct the in*’l try. No date has yet been announced for the departure of the team.
