WANGANUI EAST SCHOOL

COMMITTEE TO MAKE UP

DEFICii IN FRANCES

Expenditure £4O in excess of the amount raised in the general account was incurred by the vvanganui iLast School Committee last year, and this deficit will have to be made good by the committee itself, as the Wanganui Education Board on Tuesday declined to make a grant to cover this outstanding amount. “They have no special expenditure to account for this increase, all the money going on routine matters," stated the secretary, Mr. G. N. Boulton, in recommending that the grant be not approved. In giving details of the committee’s finances, the secretary stated that about £7O had been raised by the committee, including donations. “Without much effort a school of that size should raise the extra £40,” considered Mr. W. B. Tennent, who quoted smaller schools in Palmerston North which raised from £l5O to £3OO.

“Certainly they haven’et raised very much this year, but circumstances come into it,” stated Mr. W. G. Price. The committee had done good work, and he moved an amendment that a grant of £2O be made. Seconder of this was Mr. J. C. Batt, who also spoke of the good work the committee was doing. He suggested that the board secretary could assist the committee to regain its footing by cutting out expenditure not absolutely essential.

At the beginning of the year th? Wanganui East School Committee had a credit balance in the special account of £ll4. and finished up with the account being £149 to the good, showing an increase of £35, pointed out the chairman, Mr. E. F. Hemingway.

“If they are to continue piling up a Special account and running up a deficit in the general account and ask us to pay that, the position would be impossible,” he added.

“Other schools may be in greater need of assistance than Wanganui East, which has such a sound special account, and any money we have should* go to those in greater need." Mr. Hemingway added.

“The system is wrong, for there is not enough money coming forward to run the school, and others besides Wanganui East are in the same posi-

tion,’’ said Mr. Tennent. “However, other schools raise extra money to make do. and Wanganui East: should do likewise.” On being put to the vote the amendment was lost and the grant, was declined.
