INCREASE IN FREIGHT RAILED FROM ARAMOHO STATION LAST YEAR
General freight railed from the Aramoho station during the year ended March 31 last, totalled 64.736 tons, an increase of 15,198 tons when compared with the 49,538 tons handled the previous year.
The chemical works at Aramoho contributed the bulk of the outward freight, fertilisers railed from the company’s private siding totalling 55.006 tons, an increase of 8754 tons.
The station experienced a busy year, and though some items show a slight decrease, others reflect a continual upward tendency*
There was a decrease of 1401 passenger journeys from Aramoho, but Revenue actually showed an increase of £238. The drop in passenger journeys was due to fewer troops travelling, and the increase in revenue was caused largely by the lifting of travel restrictions last year. Actually, more civilians travelled at normal rates, compared with fewer members of the Armed Forces at reduced fares.
The number of sheep railed showed a decrease of 20,060, due mainly to the dry season and the fact that many sheep were transported direct to the freezing works by road instead of being railed. The dry season also accounted for a drop of 49 tons in the quantity of cheese railed.
Detailed returns, with those for last year in parenthesis, are:—Passengers, 24,165 ( 25.566); season tickets. 15 (29); cattle, 7469 (7694); sheep, 34,399 (54,459); timber, 25 tons (9 tons); other goods. 64,736 (49,538).
