Highland Princess Due. Navy, Army and Air Force personnel, with dependants, will arrive in Wellington on Sunday by the Highland Princess, which is scheduled to berth at Aotea Quay, at 11 a.m. The draft comprises 291 persons.- -P.A. Spillane Cup Rugby The annual Easter tournament for North Island Marist Rugby clubs, who play for the Spillane Cup, is being resumed this year after the wartime break. The tournament will be held at Napier and it is expected that seven teams will compete with Auckland, Palmerston North, Hastings, Wanganui, Gisborne Marist, Gisborne Celtic, and Napier represented. The Wellington Marist Club intended to compete but was unable to arrange transport. Criminal Appeals.

After. announcing in the Court of Appeal in Wellington that the appeals of five prisoners under the new Criminal Appeal Act were dismissed and three others held over for the next sitting, the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers) remarked that more than 50 applications had been made under Ihe Act during the present sitting. This had meant a tremendous amount of work for the Court. In some cases 50 or 60 typewritten pages of evidence had had to be gone through.

Fishing Improving District anglers have reported improved fishing conditions in the streams leading info Lake Taupo, says the “Chronicle’s” Marton correspondent One Marton party recently secured full bags while fishing in the Stream. In two days, one angler caught 17 fish, including one BMb. trout. Few good results have been reported from the Tongariro Stream, mainly due to the fact that it is still ash-laden. Several anglers from the Rangitlkei district are at the Taupo fishing grounds this Easter.

Young People’s Camp. About 120 are attending the young people’s Easter camp being held by the Church of Christ in Wanganui. Parties have come from various parts of the North Island and the visitors are being accommodated at the Keith Street and Queen’s Park Schools until Monday night. Campers arrived at intervals from 6 p.m. on Thursday until 8 a.m. yesterday, which was spent in organising and introductions. The campers include 30 from Auckland, 10 from North Auckland. 20 from Wellington, 38 from Wanganui, 12 from Palmerston North and three from the South Island. An upriver picnic has been planned for to-day.

Colliers in Port. Two colliers with coal from West Coasc mines are in port at Castlecliff, and between them have 1450 tons. They are the Rata, which arrived at 12.40 a.m. yesterday from Greymouth, and the Holmlea, which arrived lx. hours later from Westport. The Rata has 850 tons of coal, of which 200 tons is consigned to the Railways Department. The rest L mainly £oi the Gas Works. The arrival of the Holmlea with 300 tons of coal for industrial consumers will relieve the shortage in Wanganui to some extent. The vessel also has 300 tons of railway coal for distribution among locomotive depots in the district. Both colliers will discharge at the week-end and are expected to complete to-morrow.
