RUGBY FOOTBALL

MEETING OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE A recommendation from the Pirates Club that three lootballs be provided at all senior’ matches this season was declined at the fortnightly meeting of the Management Committee of the Wanganui Rugby Football Union last night. Apart from the ball provided by each participating team, stated the recommendation, a further ball should be provided by the union. It was pointed out that if three balls were on the field at each match the result would be a wholesale loss of balls.

The Pirates Club was granted permission to travel to Palmerston North to play both senior and junior matches next Saturday. A letter was received from Kaierau offering the use of tlieir gymnasium to Wanganui anj Old Boys on Wednesday nights at the charge of £3, plus all damages. The offer was accepted with thanks, and, as previously decided, the rental would be paid by the union.

Affiliation was sought by the United Club (Waitotara) as a junior club. An application that their club colours be black and blue was also received.— Both applicatibns were accepted.

The St. John Ambulance wrote requesting that a shelter be erected at Spriggens Park for the use of the ambulance officers on duty at football matches. It was decided that a shelter with a seating capacity of two be built into the bank at the side of the field.

An application was received from the Railway Club requesting the use of Spriggens Park on Sunday afternoons for the playing of Cascade Cup fixtures.—The application was declined and at the same time it was stressed that this matter was a "hardy annual” and was contrary to the terms of the council’s lease for the ground. The ground position was discussed, and it was stated that there would be 28 teams, apart from school teams, playing in Wanganui each Saturday. Taking into consideration that at least three teams would be playing outside Wanganui every week, it. was estimated that there would be no shortage of grounds.

An application from Marist to travel to Napier to compete m the Spillane Cup tournament at Easter was approved.

Mr. Stewart (Pirates) pointed out that' on the day of the Murphy-Patrick light at Wellington normal patrons of the Rugby ground would be tempted away from the game. After discussion it was decided that a loud-speaker be set up in the stand on Sprigigens Park on the afternoon concerned to enable football fans to attend the games and at the same time listen-in to the bout.
