BRIGHTON HURDLES

RAMILLIES IMPRESSED AT TE AROHA

(Special) Auckland, April 10. Twelve months ago Ramillies carried 9.0 and won the Brighton Hurdles, beating Kanui te Pai (11.3) by a short neck, with Varuna (10.10) two lengths back, third. That year the field was regarded as probably the weakest ever seen out in the big two-year-old hurdle race at the Ellerslie Easter meeting. Last Saturday Ramillies won the hurdle race at the Poverty Bay meeting at Te Aroha, and that success will bring him into keen demand for the Brighton Hurdles next ■ Saturday week. H? will have to carry 10.11, which is an advance of 251 b on the impost he carried last year, but his display at Te Aroha was impressive. He was a fail- way back in the early and middle stages, but when asked for an effort he soon made up his ground and won going away. Royce went one of his best races in the hurdles at Te Aroha, and it was only the superior stamina of Ramillies that brought about his defeat, but he beat the others just as easily. This showing will bring the chestnut into favour for soming hurdle races where the opposition is not too strong, and if he gives of his best he can be regarded as a good proposition. He is an acceptor for the hurdles at the Thames fixture on Saturday next.

Another Brighton Hurdles candidate to make an impression at Te Aroha was Brantome, who finished well for third in the hack seven furlongs. The big chestnut looks a picture for coming engagements, and In view of his impressive form last autumn and winter he should have a good season among the jumpers. With Diamond King, a possible favourite, also in the Brighton Hurdles, this event will arouse a great deal of interest. Kanui te Pai. second last year with 11.3, is now down to 10.5.
