JUVENILE WINNER AT TE AROHA

CHRISTOPHER ROBIN FILLY (Special) Auckland, April 10. After a series of placed performances, Mary Jane won the two-year-old event at Te Aroha last week in impressive style. She did her task well all the way and she came home strongly. Jon Rosa, the favourite, who was third a length away, might have made it more difficult for the winner had he been better placed. Mary Jane, who is freely engaged in handicaps at coming meetings, is a filly by Chrstopher Robin from Limulus, by Chief Ruler. She was purchased by Mr. S. Otway for 370 guineas at the national sales last year, and she has already won £435. A fine exhibition of sheer speed was given by Verdant at Te Aroha when he literally walked away with the open mile, his showing being so good that he will now be in strong demand for the Auckland Easter Handicap. He got to the front early in the Gisborne Handicap. Some expected him to come back to his field, but he was actually going away again in the final stages. With 7.13 in the Auckland Easter mile next week the chestnut may be a difficult proposition for some of the more heavily weighted horses, for he is brilliant and now seems to be better than ever.

Another easy win was registered by Our Bridge at Te Aroha, this following a runaway success over a poor lot of maidens at Te Aroha a week earlier. On her present form this filly should keep on winning, the hat trick being well within her capabilities, for in her next engagement or two she will not be meeting anything very special. Our Bridge was not entered for the Auckland Easter fixture, so it looks as if she will be at Rotorua for the holiday week-end, and she may possibly be a runner at Thames this week. When he ran third at the recent Manawatu meeting, Bettermusk gave evidence of returning to his best form. In the mile and a-quarter hack at Te Aroha he outstayed the field in the closing stages arid is evidently going to be a good stayer. Bettermusk has been entered for the Thames, Auckland and Rotorua meetings.
