MILLIONS SUFFER FROM FAMINE Shanghai, April 8. U.N.R.R.A. is organising an emergency distribution of food by air in an effort to combat famine so severe that several millions are reported to be eating grass, bark, roots, and even clay. Major-General Claire Chennault disclosed that he is forming an air transport unit to fly U.N.R.R.A. relief to stricken areas. Seven million are said to be starving in Hunan province alone; 5,000,000 are close to starvation in Honan and Hupeh provinces, while food is seriously short in Kwangtung, Anhwei, and Manchuria. The chief sufferers include refugees travelling south and west to Hankow, where they hope to obtain transportation to their pre-war homes. They are mostly on foot, and many are reported to be dying on the roadside. U.N.R.R.A. officials said child mortality in Hunan Is appallingly high, with child suicides not unknown, U.N.R.R.A. is shipping medical sup plies to combat bubonic plague and cholera in the critical areas. In addition, U.N.R.R.A. has established rice kitchens in Hunan province to alleviate the hunger of 32,000,000 residents and countless refugees.
