HIGHER PAY CODES
BRITISH SERVICES OFFICERS London, March 6. Substantially higher codes o£ pay for Navy, Army and Air Force officers are announced in a White Paper today. The increases, which will cost about £3,000,000 a year, will be effective as from July 1, coincidentally with the introduction of new rates for other ranks. The Government is satisfied that the new rates compare favourably with incomes in- other professions. Typical examples of the new scale, with marriage allowances, are as follow:—A flying officer, aged 29, £533 ti year; an Army captain, aged 27, £648; a naval lieutenant-commander, aged 30, £812; a wing-commander, aged 35, £1141; a colonel, aged 46, £1460; a naval captain, aged 49, £1724. The marriage allowance giving 'specific additions for children will be abolished. There will be increased opportunities for obtaining a commission from the ranks, and a period of other-rank service will be necessary- before entry to Army and R.A.F. colleges, where fees in future will not be charged.
