ARAMOHO CLUB WINS

‘ HEAD-OF-THE RIVER” RACES INTERPROVINCIAL EIGHT REPRESENTATIVES Aramoho will represent the Wanganui Rowing Association in the ineights, to be rowed at Wellington on Saturday, March 23, and will also collect the Aulsebrook Cup as a result of winning the senior “head-of-the-river” race cn Saturday. In the junior section the Aramoho Club's crew also came home first. The senior crew, which proved the best combination and will make the Wellington trip is: J. Schneider (str.), T. Preater, J. Brown, D. Simonson, M. James, W. Carroll, A. McNicol, D. Morrison (bow). These were the first “head-of-the-river” contests to be held since 1941 and the forthcoming Wellington fixture the first interprovincial eights to bo held since 1940. On that occasion the Wanganui Association was also represented by the Aramoho Club, who carried off the honours.

Saturday was a good day for rowing and the events attracted a good attendance of enthusiasts along the course. The finishing point for both the senior and junior races was at Calver’s corner and it was unfortunate for those who attended there that the willows growing on the river bank caused an obstruction to the view and prevented spectators from having a full view of the racing.

The senior eights rowed a course of two miles and provided a fast finish, with Aramoho, Union and Wanganui in that order. The unsuccessful crews were:— Union Boat’Club: E. Crutchley (str.), J. Coats, H. Benge, D. Crabb, H. Halkett, R. Crombie. C. R. Butters, J. Buller (bow). Wanganui Club: M. Clay, K. A. Staton. L. Northover, H. S. Clark, Anderson, Byers, M. R. Breed, G. Leighton-Jones.

From an even start, Union were first to show out and at Webb’s shed were half a length clear of Aramoho, but this margin was steadily reduced and the leaders were overhauled at the Aramoho Club’s shed. From the railway bridge, Aramoho forged ahead and were running a length and a canvas clear with about 100 yards to go. Belatedly, Union made a come-back but the finishing gun sounded with them three-quarters of a length back. Wanganui, who were never dangerous, finished well back. The placings in the junior event were the same as the seniors, Vnion just heading Wanganui out of second place. The personnel of the rival crews were:—Wanganui Club: Foster, Gould, Lunnon. Nancarrow, Ryan, Delves, Ross. Handley. Union: R. Smith, I. Rolls, J. Sheppard. J. Minnell. C. Tasker. B. Jones, G. Jones, A. Paul. Aramoho: E. Johnson (str.), W. Davidson, R. Kendrick, H. Snringer, F. Coker, J. Tate, L. Managh, L. Ahern (bow).

The distance for this race was one and a-half miles. Union momentarily took the lead, but were ouickly disposed of by Aramoho. who steadily increased their load all the way. finishing with a comfortable two and ahalf lengths’ advantage. Union, when nut to it, succeedol in holding Wanganui off bv two-thirds of a length. The judge of th* races was Mr. T. Small, and the starters Messrs. P. Benefield and E. Crottv. The umpiring was undo’daken bv Messrs. M. Ryan and W. S. Coombos. UNION BOAT CLUB.
