MORE SANATORIUM SITES

INSPECTIONS BY. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Several more sites which have been inspected around Wanganui may be suitable for the erection of the proposed £500,000 sanatorium which will accommodate tuberculosis patients from Western District Hospital Board areas. These inspections have been made voluntarily by both senior and junior members of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce, it was reported at the monthly meeting of th* senior executive last night. The chamber’s suggestions are being submitted to the Wanganui Hospital Board officials, and the various sites will be inspected next week by Mr T. C. Kincaid (Taihape), who is the Wanganui board’s representative on the Western Districts Joint Sanatorium Committee. The chairman, Mr. A. McPhail, said that several new sites had been viewed, but he understood that the question of price and whether owners would sell entered into the question in some instances. Mr. W. D. Young: We should submit for consideration any land wc consider suitable. The price is no object if the land benefits T.B. patients as a sanatorium site. It can be taken under the Public Works Act if necessary. Mr. McPhail: I don’t know that we would like to see that happen, though the welfare of patients is the first consideration.

The president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Mr. B. E. A. Williams, said his members had been actively interested in the search jor a site, and were in touch with the Wanganui Hospital Board's T.B. officer, Dr. W. A. Priest. The junior chamber hoped that one of the sites it had looked over would prove suitable.

Congratulating the junior chamber on its interest, Mr. R. G. Taiboys said it. was not easy, however, to get 70 acres of flat land with proper drainage and water, as was necessary for the sanatorium site. Mr. Williams .aid that one site in particular had all these qualifications. It was at Aramoho.
