CARNIVAL NOTES
The interprovincial championship in women's softball begins to-day at 9 a.m., with Wanganui v. Auckland. Wellington plays South Auckland at 10.30 a.m. The afternoon draw is: Auckland v. South Auckland at 2 o’clock and Wellington v. Wanganui at 3.30 o’clock. Wellington specialises in heavy hitting, Shirley Jenkins and Eva Knight being prominent in this department. Wanganui will be materially assisted by their two fast Ditchers, Audrey Hood and Mary McIntyre.
Softball began in New Zealand In 1938 and the number of registered players is now approximately, Auckland 600, Wanganui 400. Wellington 830, South Auckland 300, and South Island 1000.
The physique of the girls in the representative teams is outstanding. Their uniforms arc smart and attractive. Colour, speed in thought and action and teamwork are prominent, features of the game.
At. 5 o’clock this evening a start will be made with the heats of five national cycling events. These will occupy some two hours. The finals will be decided when the rest, of the ch am pi on shins are hold on Sa t urday.
