N.Z. CLUB IN CAIRO CLOSED DOWN
(PA.) Wellington, Jan. 28. The New Zealand Forces Club—by far the most popular Services Club in Cairo--was closed down on New Year’s Eve. Opened in February, 1941, just before the campaign in Greece and Crete, this club was a pioneer in providing co nplete service for New Zealand soldiers. It was established with funds from the National Patriotic Board.
On the morning of December 31, Brigadier J. M. Mitchell, commanding the New Zealanct troops in Egypt, thanked the Ca ro women helpers for their service to the club and for generous hospitality in their own homes. On New Year's Eve a much depleted staff set down with a few visiting “Kiwis” for the last meal in the club. “These rooms are haunted with the memory of men of Crete, El Alamein and Casino,” Colonel F. Waite said “Tins place has been a home away from home for New Zealand soldiers, sailors, airmen and nurses. It. has been a meeting place for New Zealandeis from all the services from all over ihe world.”
