CORNWELL CUP

(P.A.) Christchurch, Jan. 23. Auckland (T. Miller and R. Croad) won the 1946 Cornwell Cup, blue riband of New' Zealand junior yachting, by securing the necessary three wins with a well-deserved victory this morning at Akaroa. Tauranga was second. Parameta third and Lyttelton fourth in this'morning's race. The race was never in doubt, as Auckland early established a commanding lead. Only six boats finished, the rest capsizing on the final run home. Auckland had increased their lead to 3min. 30sec. as they rounded the buoy to enter on the last round. Tauranga was next, with Paremata Irnin. 45sec. back, and Christchurch 15sec behind Paremata. Timaru had retired after failing to make the weather mark. The wind had nowfreshened, and was blowing strongly from the south, making control of the boats difficult. At the weather mark the wind was at gale force, and after rounding Auckland headed in under Green Point, where conditions were easier. Tauranga rounded the mark after several attempts, about 3min. clear of Paremata. When Tauranga got round Auckland were almost home. Tauranga followed Auckland home Smin. 24sec. later, with Paremata Imin. 18sec. further astern. All the other boats, except Lyttelton, Christchurch and Akaroa, failed to finish.
