GALLOPS AT AWAPUNI

TRENTHAM CANDIDATES (Special) Palmerston N., Jan. 18. The decisive defeat of the Wellinglon Cup candidates, Financial and Langue d’Or, over a mile by A.ethea was a feature of the final trials for Trent ham-engaged horses at Awapuni yoteraay morning. Although his time was not outstanding, Saludos did not lose any friends by his mile effort. The best sprint was again credited to the Telegraph Handicap candidate, Sir Bradbury. Conditions were perfect and the course proper, with the pegs out 30ft., was available for fast work.

Alter reeling off the first two in 23 4-ssec, Sir Bradbury recorded 1.5 1-5 lor five furlongs. He looks well and has never worked better, but has little to recommend him on latest form. Saludos (Sellars) had Tahli (Boreham) companion over a mile run in 1.50, the last seven furlongs in. 1.3 b. Finishing full of running, Saludos drew clear in the straight and gave the impression that he coujd have done a good deal better if pusned. He has made most improvement lately of the local Cup horses and looks a mass of condition. Indira (Waddell) dashed over three fin longs smartly in 39sec. Rink and Stiver were evenly matched over a mile in 1.49 4-5. The latter has been racing unluckily, and will appreciate the drop in weight to 7.0 in the Ashhurst Cup. After travelling fast early. Dutch Mary was stopping at the end of five furlongs in 1.6 3-5.

Gala Song strode home the last five furlongs of a mile in 1.6 3-5. Specialist ran an easy half-mile in l-ssec. Flirtatious was too goed for Liberality over three furlongs in 42 l-ssec. Dileas moved freely while covering live furlongs in 1.5 1-5. Financial (Bowness), Langue d’Or (Sellars) and Alethea (Broughton) were associated over a mile. They raced in close order to the first han in 51 l-ssec, but Alethea then drew away to finish two lengths in front of Langue d’Or with Financial three lengths back in 1.48 3-5. The Cup candidates disappointed by their lack of dash over the concluding stages, particularly F/.iancial.

Yandra pleased by defeating Tula and Oemo rather comfortably over seven furlongs in 1.37 1-5. Recent form suggests that she is capable of a good effort in the Ruapehu Handicap to-morrow.

The Ashhurst Cup candidates, Lady Spiral and Broiefield, were both finishing well at the conclusion of a mile in 1.47 4-5, after running the first live furlongs in 1.7 1-5. This was the best effort over the distance and both are likely to be in strong favour on Anniversary Day. After running to the half-mile in 53sec., Flying Ace was not pushed to complete seven furlongs in 1.36 2-5. He looks very bright and is tu race on the second and third day at Trentham.

Arco was travelling easly alongside Phalaria at the end of seven furlongs in 1.36 4-5, the first four taking 54scc. Blanket, who is beginning to assume racing shape, strode over live furlongs in 1.8 3-5. Prefa and Glen Urquhart sprinted a similar distance in 1.6 2-5. On the plough, Kanui te Pai, Bunhill and Bay Robe ran home the last three furlongs of their work in 40 3-5 sec., with the latter finishing slightly in front. Roto Parera and Kelmont were sent a mile and were timed to run the last five furlongs in 1.10 1-5.
