N.Z. PASSENGERS STRANDED

VESSEL WITHOUT A CREW LABOUR TROUBLE IN AUSTRALIA Recd. 11 p.m. Sydney, Jan. 18. With over 500 passengers gathered at the wharf, with piles of baggage, the New Zealand relief steamer Katoomba is still idle because of a crew dispute. She should have sailed at noon, but by mid-afternoon no crew had been signed on, and her departure was indefinite. Passengers waited on the wharf in stifling humidity, and are stnl waiting in the rain. Some of the p; angers booked have been waiting lor six months.

The dispute concerns the manning scale for firemen arranged by the Maritime Industry Commission. The scale provides for 24 firemen for any voyage north of Cairns. As the transTasman voyage is below that latitude the original manning scale of 21 applies. The men refuse to answer the call for labour.
