CHURCHILL IN U.S.
WILL STAY TWO MONTHS JOINT ACTION URGED IN PALESTINE PROBLEM
Reel. 10.35 p.m. New York, Jan. 14. Mr. and Mrs. Churchill arrived by the Queen Elizabeth for a two months’ stay in the United States. Asked at an informal conference with journalists whether, as suggested by some South American republics, he would be willing to take over the secretaryship of the United Nations, ho said it was the first he had heard of such an idea. He would not commit himself. He would not resign Ihe leadership of th n Conservative Party until he was satisfied the party could see its way ahead and was able to make better arrangements for its future. It was not true that he was writing his memoirs. He was not sure whether he ever would, though he might put down a few things. Mr. Churchill expressed himself in favour of a joint British-American inquiry into Palestine. "I have been a Zionist from the beginning of the experiment, but the burden of Palestine is too great for Britain to bear with the Arab and Moslem problems. T hope for better results from joint action. Americans ought to come along and help. I certainlv think Ihe matter too difficult to be handled by one nation.”
It would be a great mistake to share atom bomb secrets until proper international control was established over so dread an agency, he said. He hoped to meet President Truman at Fulton, Missouri, on March 5. after which he would stav in the United States for a fortnight or so. Mr. Churchill resolutely refused to answer questions about either American or British domestic politics, and would not discuss the possible rejection of the British loan by Congress or a rearrangement of Empire preference. Mr. Churcnill left for Miami, where he will be the guest of Colonel Frank Clarke, a former resident of Quebec, who entertained him after the 1943 Quebec Conference.
