FOURS CHAMPIONSHIP

SENSATIONAL FINISH BY KELBURN RINK N.Z. BOWLING TOURNEY AT CHRISTCHURCH (P.A.) ChristchurcJj, Jan. 15. The sensational match-winning effort of to-day’s play in the Dominion championship bowling fours tournament was the last-head win by the Kelburn rink skipped by J. R. Smith, which was seven down with one end to play, scored eight and won by 22 to 21. Smith was eliminated in. the ninth round of the singles but has won all his games in the fours. G. A. Deare, who is skipping a strong Mt. Albert rink, suffered an unexpected loss in the third round, being decisively beaten 33 to 12 by F. Smith's Temuka rink. Deare, however, won the fourth round comfortably and his rink will still have to be reckoned with during the latter stages of the fours. J. Veitch (Dunedin) suffered his third successive reverse in the fours when he was beaten by J. Middlemass (Alexandra) 31—16 in the third round. He has failed to qualify for post-sec-tional play but his rink is still capable of causing major upsets in the section, which includes previous fours champions in P. Munn (Canterbury) and R. Haworth (Wanganui East). In the third round Munn lost to Fleming (Otaki Railway) but scored a win over Haworth 26—22 in the fourth. That was Haworth’s second loss and he must win his remaining games to qualify for post-sectional play.

M. Giles (United) won both games in the same section yesterday and now has four wins to his credit.

Last year’s winner of the title, J. A. Engebretsen (Heretaunga), who lost a game on Monday, won two games today, each by a comfortable margin. The Hamilton rink skipped by T. Gee, which scored two easy wins on Monday, enhanced its chances for post-sectional play to-day when it won its two games. This is a particularly strong rink which should go a long way in this division of the tournament. FAMILY RINKS MEET. In the third round of Section N a Sydenham team comprising R-, C., A. and W. Britten (skip) was matched against a Wakefield team which included M. R.» D. T., C. M. and E. W. Eden. Both were family rinks and after a keen game the Edens won by 28 points to 21. A rink composed of members of the Martin family, representing Edgeware, lost its fourth round game to an Owaka team which included three members of the Alloo family, wellknown in cricket sorrfe years ago. Alloo’s team has now three wins to its credit and Martin, who has lost two games, must win his next four to qualify for post-sectional play. Martin is the present holder of the singlettitle.

It is too early yet to see how tho competition will shape but already several of the less prominent players have distinguished themselves and seem likely to get in post-section playMany fours had their third loss however, thus virtually eliminating then chances of getting into the final stages. The green were again fast.
