CAMPERS FIGHT FLAMES
BUSH FIRE AT ROTORUA. Rotorua, Jan. 8. A considerable area of native bush was destroyed and a number of summer cottages endangered when fire swept the hilly slopes on the southern shore of Lake Okareka and east of Lalte Tarawera last night, reports the NT- Herald correspondent. The outbreak, which began in dry scrub in a gully, ran unchecked into
part of the scenic reserve and came perilously close to four baches built I in the timbered area. The occupants turned out and fought the flames, while firebreaks were cut as an addi- . tional precaution. i The fire was got under control early ■ this morning before any damage to the • dwellings had been done. A rain i shower later helped to put the holi- : daymakers more at their ease, but ! evidence of the fire will remain on the slopes of the hill for some years to ’ come. It is believed that the'fire was > caused by a careless Dienic party.
