MORE HOME LIFE
CHANGING WORLD
SALVATIONIST’S PLEA “1 welcome every move in legislation that ensures that the mother shall not be broken at her task of home-making, but the cry of. my heart for the nations to-day is at all costs for the mothers to get back to the home—godly homes are the foundation of the worthv nation," said Mrs. General Carpenter, when addressing a large women's rally at Auckland on Monday. “I am not advocating that a woman should shut herself in her home to the exclusion of other interests. Take my own experience. 1 have been a Salvation officer and a raother for 45 years. I have given my heart to my home and my family, but have also contrived to give much service to the people.
“To-day the world is strangely mixed in its thinking. „ A hundred years ago it was considered that a woman’s work was exclusivelv in the home with her children. There is a different prospect to-day. There Is hardly a section of life where woman is not making her presence felt, often helpfully, with dignity and success. “Given opportunity, woman is capable of succeding in every noble vocation. The war has revealed her powers, has accentuated and accelerated her public service. Now that the war is over we may well pause and ask what of the present and the future. “I am specially interested concerning the married woman. In some quarters, loud voices are demanding I hat a woman, married or single, shall he free to choose her own work. Bui can men choose their own work? A married woman’s finest work is to be done in her home. “For the unmarried women there are avenues of noble service in education. in medicine, in science and In social service, and in all these callings her maternal instinct can find full play and make noble contribution in her day.
