ARRIVAL OF THE DELEGATIONS

MANY FOREIGN MINISTERS IN LONDON Recd. 6 p.m. London, Jan. 7. Nine more delegations arrived in Britain to-day for the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly. The latest arrivals were the Czechoslovak delegates, headed by their Foreign Minister, Mr. Jan Masaryk. The American Secretary of State, Mr. James Byrnes, is due in London tomorrow afternoon. Members of the United States delegation held a Press conference this afternoon, when Mr. E. R. Stettinius stressed their determination to put into action the decision reached at San Francisco. Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt said that no world organisation could be successful without the will of the people behind it. “The success of the United Nations is not something we can just hope for,” she said. “It is something we have lo work for with everything we have got.” Warsaw radio says that the Polish delegation will give the fullest support to the British resolution calling on the Assembly to urge an extension of UNRRA’s activities. Poland will also apply for membership of the Security Council. In Washington, Mr. Byrnes announced the formation of a five-man committee to study controls and safeguards to protect America’s secrets

regarding atomic energy. He said that he was doing this in anticipation that the United Nations could agree to set up the proposed commission on atomic energy.

By Wednesday evening there will be approximately 50 Foreign Ministers in London for the opening of the Assembly on Thursday. Tne only exreption will be Mr. Molotov, who is sending the Deputy Commissar for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Vyshinsky. The final preparations for the great meeting which will plan the world’s peace are being made by a sub-committee of 10 men, who are completing the agenda. Nearly half the delegates have now arrived from all parts of the world. When all have arrived they and their staffs will number more than 2000. The American delegation alone totals 94 and the Russian 100.
