TANEATUA MYSTERY
MAORI WOMAN MISSING CLOTHING AND NOTE FOUND Hastings, Jan. 4 Mystery surrounds the whereabouts of a Maori woman who left Hastings ’> week before the Christmas holiday period to visit the Whakatane district. She visited a Maori pa near I’aneatua, and subsequently women’s clothes, believed to be her property, were found near a creek, but no trace of a body or of the woman has been found by the police of Poverty Bay or Hawke’s Bay.
The mi. sing woman is Mrs. Iwi« Pirihi, also known as Pohatu, aged about 45, residing at 207 Hastings Street North, Hastings. She left about December 18 for the Whakatane district, and there is a record of her having visited Wainui pa, near Tanea.ua, on December 21.
With the clothing found alongside the creek near the pa was a note stating that the owner had been badly burned, but that she wi hed to bo left alone and would make her way back to Hastings. It is known that Mrs. Pnihi was interested in the history of Io Kooti, and the locality where her clothes wore found is in'the vicinity of Te Kocti’s burial place.
