CHRISTCHURCH CROWDED
BOWLERS TAX HOTEL ACCOMMODATION (F.A.) Christchurch, Jaan. 7. By to-night Christchurch will have acquired a•• floating population of something over 1000 people, drawn here by the New Zealand bowling championships from as far north as Whangarei and as far soutn as Bluff. The influx of visitors for the championships, which will open to-morrow, is comparable with crowds that used to stay in Christchurch for the prewar August and November racing weeks. Accommodation is at a premium, one of the largest city hotels having more than a hundred bowlers on its register. Many players have brought their wives and families with them. Not all the 900 visiting players, plus their wives and families, could be accommodated at hotels, and the New Zealand Bowling Association had to make arrangements for many to stay in private homes. On the. present indications the tournament should last 11 or 12 playing days, ending about January 21 or 22. The tournament will be opened officially at 8.15 a.m. to-morrow by the Deputy-Mayor (Cr. M. E. Lyons), and the president, of the New Zealand Bowling Council, Mr. A. Dickson.
