41 NURSES BACK IN N.Z.
A parly of 41 nursing Hsters returned to New Zealand by the Mooltan. Many have had more than four yea s’ serv/ e.
Some 130-odd nursing sisters are rtdl overseas, eight of whom are in England, where they have been attached to prisoner-of-war hospitals. It L expec.ed that they will all probably be back within the next month or so, according as shipping becomes available. Among those who arrived this week was Sister May Harvey, an Auckland nurse, who for the past four and ahalf years has been senior officer in the ma sage department of No. 1 New Zealand General Hospital in the Middle Easl. From 1941 to early in 1944 Sister Harvey served at the base hospital at Helwan, near Cairo. She went to Italy in April, 1944, and spent live months at. Molfetta, wnere casualties were heavy, and then to Senigallia, the location of H.Q. of lhe 2nd N.Z.E.F., where she remained till last. Maj-. In May of this year, Si ter Harvey was selected to undertake a special reficsher course in physiotherapy, ami she has visited many hospitals in Great Britain, studying the late i. physiotherapy treatments for chest, ami head injuries and orthopaedic cases, and taking particular interest in remedial drill and exercises applicable to the treatment of amputee case:. While in London Sister Harvey attended an inyestiture at Buckingham Palace, where she received a decoration as an Associate of the Royal Red Cross. The Auckland Hospital Board has appointed Sister Harvey to take charge of the phsiotherapy and ma - sage department at the Auckland Hospital, and she will take up this position early in the New Year.
