TO WITHDRAW FROM THE LEVANT
BRITISH AND FRENCH LEBANON NOT BOUND BY JOINT AGREEMENT Recd. 11 p.m. Beirut, Dec. 23. British and French commanders have met in Damascus to discuss the withdrawal o. British and French forces from the Levant, which has been decided upon jointly by the two nations. The intention of Britain and France to ensure independence for the Levant States is declared in the text of joint policy statements relating to the regrouping and withdrawal of troops from the Levant. Each Government also affirms iLs intention to do nothing to supplant the interests and responsibilities of the other in the Middle East, having full regard for the political status of the countries in question.
Reuth’s Damascus correspondent says the Prime Minister. Aljabri, told Parliament that the Government received explanations on almost all points of the British-French Levant agreement, except those regarding the United Nations’ forces to replace the British and. French troops. Parliament has referred the matter to its Foreign Affairs Committee for consideration. and a speedy report. Business in Damascus closed down during the discussion, some students demonstrating against the agreement. Reed. 11.20 p.m. Beirut, Dee. 22. The Lebanese Government issued a statement that it would not be bound by the British-French agreement, regarding the Levant, which was reached in her absence and tended to infringe her rights and interests.
