FORMER PRESIDENT OF PANAMA
HE HAS BEEN ARRESTED
CHARGES THAT HE WAS INCITING REVOLT.
Recd. 10 p.m. Panaifta City, Dec. 23. A former Pres dent of Panama, Arias, has been arrested and charged with instigating a revolt wherem seven were killed and seven wounded.
Arias denied responsibility. The police are round.ng up his followers throughout the nation. Twenty-live have been arrested so far. Police reinforcements were hurried to Colon, where the situation is officially described as under control. Arias returned from exile two months ago. and immediately launched a political campagin criticising United States policy regarding Panama, and reiterating Nationalist beliefs. He also made claims to the Presidency from which he was ousted in 1941. An earlier message said at least four wer e killed in a short-lived revolut onary effort at Colon, where a band of armed men tried to se.ze the police station. The guard at the Presidency opened fire on seeing armed men jump from motor-cars, but shooting erased when they identified them ao reinforcements rushed to strengthen th? guard following the police station attack. The dead include one police officer. The Cv.ernment has issued a statement that an a tempt was made by f ollowers of the termer President, Amulfo Arias.
