STREET IMPROVEMENTS

CITY COUNCIL DECISION A programme of improvements to certain streets and footpaths in Wanganui was approved by the Wanganui City Council on Tuesday' night on the recommendation of the Works Committee, which has considered several petitions and individual requests. “The committee has made a careful survey of the position as it relates to the whole city. Bearing in mind the necessity for the continuation of the policy adopted by the council in the past of making provision for sealing of main traffic routes and, as funds permit, of undertaking other work leading to such thoroughfars, it would recommend that these items be put in hand,” the committee reported, referring to the following programme:— Streets: Reshape and tar-seal Kawatiri Aveitue from Dustin Street to Koromiko Road (including portion of Gorran Avenue), 11 chains; tar-seal Gonville Avenue from Heads Road to Tawa Street, 18i chains; tar-seal London Stree from Fergusson Street to Grey Street, 5i chains; tar-seal Poutini Street, 15 chains; total 50 chains. Footpaths: Keith Street from Liverpool Street to Glasgow Street (asphalt), 10 chains; Miiiward Street east side from Jones Street to connect with the new portion of road leading to Clapham Street (concrete slab), 23 chains; Talbot Street—south-east side (concrete slab), 13i chains; Godwin Crescent—south-east side (concrete slab), 15 chains; total 61i chains. Millward Stree. it i. recommended that the portion ol the new paths fronting the Government houses be proceeoed with only on condition that the Department ol Housing Construction will meet one hall the cost. Applications which have not Deen granted have been deferred for consideration when the programme of streets and loot paths work for next financial year is being framed, the committee added. • The committee would recommend that the work of tar-sealing Fitzherbert Avenue from London Street to Fox Road, a length of 36 chains, be undertaken provided the Waitotara County Council will bear two-thirds of the cost. Il is further recommended that, the council offer to carry out the sealing of 15 chains of street along Fox Road provided the county will bear the whole of lhe cost.” It was also reported that Mr. W. F. Durward had requested that kerbing and chanelling be constructed in i'arata Street. “The committee would recommend that the work be J>ut in hand on the south-eastern side the street for a distance of nine chains, from Peakes Road to Parkes Avenue.” the report added.
