CHRISTMAS VACATION

MOST INDUSTRIES CLOSING TO-MORROW YEAR NEARING ITS CLOSE With most industries closing down tomorrow' afternoon for the Christmas and New Year vacation, many people have only two working days left in 1945. Normally, business ceases on December 24, but this year Christmas Eve falls on a Monday, hence the decision to begin the holidays to-mor-row. Factories, wharehouses, merchants, and many commercial firms, other than retailers, will close to-morrow afternoon and reopen on January 3. Shipping offices w.ll reopen for periods during the holidays, however, for passenger bookings and other urgent business. Retail shops in Wanganui will observe the late shopping night on Christmas Eve and will remain open till 10 p.m. They will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, reopening on Thursday of next week. The shops will close at 5.30 p.rn. as usual on Friday, December 28, but will remain closed all day on Saturday, December 29, when Saturday closing will become general in the city for the first time. Similar trading hours will be observed at New Year, with the exception that most shops will close at 9 p.m. on Monday, December 31, the last day of the old yeaf. A few shops, however, will remain open till 10 o'clock. New Year's Day and the following day will be closed holidays, with the shops reopening on Thursday, January 3. No late night will be observed on Friday of that week and the shops wall be closed all day Saturday. The legal vacation in Wanganui will be from Saturday of this week till January 14, both days inclusive. 7 he offices of the Supreme Court and tlie Magistrate’s Court will close tomorrow afternoon and reopen on January 4. On December 28 and 31, however, the office of the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages will be open.

Few ships are likely to arrive at Wanganui during the period between Christmas and New Year. Those days usually observed as closed holidays on the waterfront are Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and January 2.

The offices of the Wanganui City Council (town clerk's and city engineer’s departments) will be closed fr >m December 25 to January 4. inclusive. The office of the Municipal Gas Department will close on December 25 and 25, and again on January 1 and 2. The Alexander Public Library wil also close on these days, but the Sarjeant Gallery will close on Christmas Dav only. These holidays were decided on by the City Council at its meeting this week Outside staffs will all cease work to-morrow for the Christmas and New Year vacation and the same will apply to the staff of the Gas Works but essential services will be maintained.
