Donation to Naw League. It was unanimously agreed, at a meeting of the Waitotara Patriotic Committee, to donate £5O of their credit balance to the Wanganui Navy League Auxiliary, for its campaign to send food for Britain.

Report of Licensing Commission By a notice published in last night's Gazette the period within which the Licensing Commission is to report has been extended to May 31 next. The period granted to the Commission was extended last August from September 1 to December 31. Servicemen’s Luncheon

Wanganui and district Naval, Army and Air Force personnel returning to New Zealand by the transport Mooltar. due at Wellington to-day, will be entertained at a civic reception and complimentary luncheon in the R.S.A. Hall at 12.15 p.m, on Saturday. This decision was reached by the Wanganui City Council by adopting a report from its Soldiers’ Entertainment Committee at the monthly meeting on Tuesday night. It was stated that other men and women of the armed forces, who have returned to the city since the previous luncheon, would also be invited. Plans for New Theatre Stating that the classes of material used would not conflict with housing requirements, Amalgamated Theatre, Ltd., in a letter before the monthly meeting on Tuesday night, sought the Wanganui City Council’s support for its application for a permit to erect a new.theatre in the lower portion of Victoria Avenue. It was not the council’s wish to deter efforts to build the new theatre, said the Mayor, Hon. W. J. Rogers, suggesting that the request for support be approved. Cr. J. F. Broad said that the number of screening nights lost to the company each year because of the Opera House being let for other purposes was steadily increasing. They were anxious to construct a new theatre, which would be ( of benefit to the city. Navy’s Appreciation.

Writing to the Wanganui City Council on behalf of officers and ratings who visited the city recently, Lieu-tenant-Commander T. W. Smith, R.N., of H.M.S. Indefatigable, stated that the hospitality extended by the council and citizens of Wanganui was so warmly appreciated that the men had only one complaint—their visit was ail too short. Lieutenant-Commander Smith's letter was before the council at its meeting this week, when the acting-chairman of the Soldiers' Entertainment Committee, Cr. G. P. Hawkins, also paid a tribute to the work of all who had helped make the visit a success. men were from the fleet carrier, Indefatigable, and her escort destroyers, Urchin and Wizard.

Progress with Crematorium. Construction of the crematorium at the Aramoho Cemetery is nearing completion, an earnest endeavour having been made to finish the work before the holidays, s.tated the architect, Mr. R. G. Tafboys, in a report to the Wanganui City Council. The plasterers had completed and the result was excellent, Mr. Taiboys added. All joinery work had been finished, with the exception of the seats, and the painters had made a start with their share of the work. It was expected that the engineers would complete the furnace and its installation by the end of January. "From a slow start the trades have moulded into an excellent team and have taken a great interest in their work,” Mr. Taiboys added. “The contractors and their men have given me splendid support during the year.”
