CITY SEWERAGE SYSTEM
PRELIMINARY APPROVAL OF £61,000 LOAN
Approval of the Wanganui City Council’s Drainage Improvement Loan, 1945, of £61,000, has been granted by the Local Government Loans Board, subject to the proposal going before a poll of ratepayers.
The loan is for improvin'* the city’s sewerage system and the term of the loan is 25. years at an interest rate not to exceed £3 10s per cent. “There is some doubt in the proposals for the outfall works, where pumping is required, as to whether single or duplicate pumping sets arc proposed.” stated a letter from the Local Government Loans Board, received by the council at its meeting last night. “It. is considered that duplicate sets should be reciuired.” The city engineer, Mr. L. F. Row, said duplicate pumps were not contemplated because there was no danger to the sewerage system even if the rump failed. Under the new scheme the sewage would go out into the river onlv at certain states of the tide. Duplication of the pumping plant would cost a great deal more, probablv another £lOOO. “You would only need a power failure and both pumps would he out,” the engineer added. “When that happens in some towns low-lying areas are Hooded, hut there would be no trouble in Wanganui.” e
