HUNTERVILLE NEWS

ANOTHER WAR MEMORIAL PROPOSAL SCHOOL ASSEMBLY HALL 10.C.1 Hunterville, Nov. 22 War memorial proposals for Hunterville and district will be tentatively discussed at a meeting of ihe Patriotic Committee on Saturday evening and it is expected that some recommendations will be formulated to be placed before a public meeting to be called later. So far there are three alternative proposals:— (1) A Memorial Hospital, suggested by the R.S.A. (2) A Hail of Remembrance and Community Centre, suggested by the Town Board. (3) A Memorial Assembly Hall at the Consolidated School, suggested by the school committee. Details of the first two proposals have already been published in the “Chronicle," but the third proposal, although decided upon some time ago by lhe school committee, has only been disclosed this week. That there is a definite need for some suitable place where children could assemble for all the normal schoo] functions—including Anzac Day and other memorial services—connot be denied, and as there is little or no prospect of the Education Department doing anything in the matter, it was felt by the committee that the provision of a Memorial Assembly Hall would be a fitting way to honour the men from the district who had made the supreme sacrifice. “Such a hall would not only be a useful adjunct to the school,” said the headmaster (Mr. G. Snadden) to-day, "but it would serve as a permanent memorial to those men, many of whom had attended the school as pupils.” The fact that the children of ex-servicemen were now, and would more.-o in the future, be pupils at the school, the Memorial Assembly Hall, in which would be placed the Roll of Honour, would keep alive in the minds of these children the significance of the sacrifices made by their fathers’ comrades who had died on active service, Mr. Snadden went on. The acute shortage of school accommodation in many centres, he added, precluded the educational authorities from taking any active ;teps in the provision of assembly halls or school memorials with the result that in all cases the public had to be appealed to.
