AUCKLAND CUP AGAIN?

FOXWYN IMPRESSES AT TE RAPA MEETING The sterling trial put up by Foxwyn at Te Rapa on Tuesday morning of last week, when the 1944 Auckland Cup winner beat Mr. Rosa narrowly in the best time recorded on the track for some considerable time, bore fruit on Saturday when Foxwyn again beat Mr. Rosa by a similar margin in an exciting finish in the ot 1945. The performance of Foxwyn was an impressive one and he fought on courageously to draw attention to pending important handicap engagements, which include the Auckland Cup. Incidentally the showing of Mr. Rosa, a disappointment in recent starts was his best for some considerable time and on the way he finished he should have prospects now that the tracks have firmed again. Hippodrome added further to his unlucky record by finishing on for third after running wide at the home turn, while Airport, for an old stager in important handicaps, was not disgraced to finish right up fourth. Bueno had every chance but on this occasion he faded after leading to the home turn. Colonel Vaals finisheir ]practically in lino with him. Dunbar, the favourite, failed to stay.

Verus showed the way past the stands to Bueno, Foxwyn, Waiting, Airport, Dunbar and Mr. Rosa. Bueno ran past Verus running into the back and was two lengths clear along the back from Waiting, Verus, Foxwyn, Dunbar and Airport, with a gap to Mr. Rosa, Onakau, Hippodrome and Colonel Vaals. Foxwyn moved up at the half-mile and was lying third here behind Bueno and Dunbar, who had made a forward move, Airport, Verus, Foxwyn (close up), Hippodrome (wide out) and Colonel Vaals. In a great finish, Foxwyn finished on to take a head decision over Mr. Rosa, with Hippodrome, in characteristic style, finishing on for third a length and ahalf away, followed by Airport, Bueno, Colonel Vaals, Oraka’u, Waiting and Verus.

At the Poverty Bay meeting at Te Aroha last May, Cricket Ball scored nicely in the Second Trial Handicap and he followed that success up by beating The Fake and Princess Doria in the first division of the First Jervois Hack at the Auckland winter meeting, winning by three lengths. In the current season,’Cricket Ball, now a four-year-old, by Cricket Bat from Gold Hind, had had two starts prior to last Saturday, when he went out to contest the open sprint, the Cambridge ‘Handicap, at Te Rapa. There was a confident tone about the support accorded the colt, for he was 6/10 in order of favouritism, and the confidence was not misplaced. After Theoress had led at the end of a couple of furlongs Cricket Ball was taken into the lead, and, after being clear at the home turn, he gave nothing else a chance 1o score the most effortless success of the day. Theoress had command early, but by the time they were fairly settled down Cricket Ball had run past her, and this pair made play at the half-mile from Peter Douglas, Expellant, Gaymeer, Good Bay and Royal Glory. Cricket Ball was four lengths clear as they straightened up for home, and he withstood all challenges in the straight to win going away by half a dozen lengths from Ghy’meer, who beat Bonny Pay, the hot favourite, by half a length. Expellent, who had entered the straight wide out, was fourth, in front of Peter Douglas. Lord Dink, Royal Glory, Nawab and Good Bay. * * The class has dropped a shade for the mid-spring meeting of the Auckland Racing Club at Ellerslie on Saturday and the Alison Cup should not be difficult to win. Broiedame ought to be a good thing on form after her close seconds in the Mitchelson Cup and the King George Handicap at her last two appearances at headquarters, although she has climbed suddenly in the weight as a result. Broiedame now heads the list of acceptors in the Alison Cup, but for all her 8.7 she should take a lot of beating. Mr. Rosa after an improved showing at Te Rapa last week, should bo capable of producing another good effort, while other Alison Cun prospects are Corot, Old Gold and Bueno. Broiedame is entitled to hold her favouritism to the day.

The Awapuni-trained Czarina, a chestnut filly by Defoe from Hine Wehi, shaped disappointingly in the Mako Mako Hack at Levin on Saturday. She has been scratched for all engagements al the C.J.C. meeting, where she was to have contested the Derby and Oaks. ‘*c * * There appeared to be some confidence in the ability of Our Pat. to beat the hack sprinters at the Lovin meeting, but the big Posterity gelding was never going like a winner. • When.the field settled down there wore six or eight in front of him and although he was hard-ridden he made very little impression on any of them. The host hack performance of the day at Otaki was I hat of Don Mac who carried 9.10 in the seven furlongs and after covering extra ground on. the home turn went within a nose of victory. On this form Don Mac is sure to be herd of a ; n. Though th< Fox on ILniii Club was allotted Saturday, Januaiv 19. as the date for its second race meet of lhe season, if i’ likely that the club will apply to hold Hie meeting at a later date, probably in May. January 19 is Wellington Cup day. and it would appear that the club is well advised to avoid a clash with such an attraction whhin easy motoring distance. Further, the Foxton course i- not likely' to be ready for racing lor some time.
