DOUBLE TO FAVOURITES AT LEVIN

LANGUE D’OK AND TUIS WiN PRINCIPAL EVENTS RECORD TOTALISATOR FIGURES Ideal weather and track conditions, large fields and a bumper attendance —these were factors which enabled the Levin Racing Club, at the Otaki course on Saturday, to enjoy a totalisator turnover of £64,704. an increase of nearly £20,000 over last year’s figures and a record amount for the manual win-and-place totalisator at a provincial meeting in the district. Racing was interesting throughout and the schedule was fairly well maintained, though at the finish the programme was about twenty minutes late.

The principal event, the Levin Handicap, was rendered particularly interesting because of the presence of half a dozen New Zealand Cup candidates, one of whom, Langue d’Or, carried off the major honours in a good finish. Tuis, who is engaged in the Stewards' Handicap, scored a comfortable win in the McDonald Memorial. Like Langue d’Or, she was the favourite, but there was a turn-up in the Champion Hack Handicap, the Opakitrained Royal Victor winning at double-figure odds. Good prices were also returned by Gold Money Song In the hurdle race, Miss Delaware in the Weraroa Hack, and Gold Shoes in the concluding event. In addition there were some excellent “place’’ dividends. Langue d’Or was always handily placed in the Levin Handicap, tucked in behind the leaders till the field swung round the turn for home. Broker’s Dream piloted the field out of the straight, just in front of Bay Robe, Langue d’Or, Day Lighting, Catterick Bridge, Hulabaloo and Black Plato, with Duality, who had got badly away, at the rear of the bunch, and Battledre:s last. Half a mile from home Hulabaloo ran up to join Bay Robe and Day Lighting in the lead, with Langue d’Or. Black Plato. Singing Hills, Financial, Broiefield and Duality following. Langue d’Or came through crossing the top and led into the straight from Broiefield. with Financial. Hulabaloo, Black Plato in close attendance and Duality showing up on the outer. In the run to the judge Langue d’Or did best to win by nearly a length from the long-priced Black Plato. The latter was a short head in front of Broiefield, who beat Financial by a nose for the minor placing. Duality was fifth, with Day Lighting, Hulabaloo, Singing Hills, Catterick Bridge and Cramond Bay next. The last three to finish were Lastik, Bay Robe and Broker's Dream.

Tuis, favourite for the McDonald Memorial, allowed Koi Fagi to make the running and then joined him at the straight entrance, where Theiolyn, Lord Coronach. Foxcatcher and Blue Bonny were their nearest attendants. Tuis was well clear at the distance and ran home an easy winner by two lengths from Theiolyn. who was three lengths in front of Koi Ragi. Lord Coronach was a length away, just in gront of the fast-finishing Gigli, who dwelt at barrier-rise. Tremello was backed down to a short price in the Champion Hack Handicap, but after trailing the leaders, Royal Victor, Achievement and Foxella, to the straight entrance, he failed badly. Royal Victor led for most of the distance and ran home two. lengths ahead of Foxella, who was a length ahead of Gynerio, the latter beating Leighon’s Glory by a head for third plape. Silver Rod was almost on terms with Leighon’s Glory, with Sunstream and Tremello five lengths further back.

Gold Money Song led all the way in the Manakau Hurdles, Odtaa falling at the third obstacle. The winner who scored on the course early in October, returned a double-figure dividend.

Soneri, favourite, easily won the first division of the Maiden Race, and Peter Robinson won the second division under a strong hold.

Miss Delaware returned a dividend of just over a score when she got the verdict, by a nose over Don Mac in the Weraroa Hack Handicap. The Trentham-trained Theorist proved too speedy for The Grand in the Mako Mako Handicap. “ and Gold Shoes, at just under double figures, led all the way in the concluding event to beat Molly Martia and Blue Chips.
