AMATEUR BOXING
OPEN AIR BOUTS ON COOK’S GARDENS
An open air amateur boxing tournament, staged by the Wanganui Boxing Association, was held on Cook’s Gardens pn Saturday night. The fixture was in aid of the Combined Carnival, because of bleak weather and counter attractions the attendance was not large. The officials were: Referee, Mr. T. Mullins; judges, Dr. Kendrick Christie, president of the Wanganui Boxing Associal ion, Messrs O. Coupland, T. Souter, and -H. Ennis. The announcements were made by Mr. C. S. Smith. Results were as follows: A verhall 4.8 beat Stantiall 4.3. Baldwin 5.8. beat Wilkinson 5.9. Baldwin was too experienced and won in the second round. McCoy 6.6 beat Davis 6.4. This was a spirited bout in which both boys gave and took punishment. Connors 5.3 drew with Gosnell 5.7. The bout was an even one and the decision was correct. Lee 6.12 drew with Hall 6.6. This proved a good hard hittting contest with both boys on even terms at the final gong. Mitchell 9.5 beat Mete Kingi 9.6. Having the advantage in height and reach, Mitchell won after a lively second and third round. Comber 7.10 beat Bullock 7.12. After an uncertain first round. Comber took the fight to his opponent and won in the second round. Kiernan 9-t. beat Horne 8.13. The winner proved too experienced a man for his opponent, who failed to connect with his blows. Fyfe 9.6 beat Jarrett 8.13. Although out-boxed in all three rounds and taking the count for eight in the first round. Jarrett gave a game showing. Falling heavily in the third round, Jarrett hit his head and was unable to continue. Korowhita 11.3 beat Hammond 11.4. Hammond injured his right thumb in the first round and was unable to continue. Farrell 9.9. beat McDonald 9.9 on a technical knock-out in the first round. Mudgway 9.2 beat Tonga 9.2. The winner was the more aggressive of the pair and put plenty of Dower into his punches and often had Tonga in retreat.
Baldwin 8.4 beat Kelly 8.6. Doing more attacking, and connecting more often, Baldwin won the decision. Maxwell 12.2 beat Hiroti 12st. After being behind in points in the first round Maxwell began to get past Hiroti’s guard and began to find his weak spots. The Maori was in distress at the end of the third and final round.
