BREAD DELIVERIES

NO ALTERATION IN WANGANUI

A decision to the effect that no alteration be made to the present method of distributing bread in the Taranaki - Wanganui district was reached unanimously a* the recent conference in New Plymouth of the West Coast (N. 1. Master Bakers’ Association.

Shortage of tyres, suitable delivery vehicles and competent labour, and increased charges for petrol, oil. tyres, vehicles and increased wages for carters, coupled with the reduction of the working week from 44 hours to 40 hours were some of the many factors that brought about the decision.

‘The trade will no doubt bp faced with a serious shortage of dried fruits, sultanas, etc., for the Qiristmas trade,” said Mr. W. S. N. Rennie, representative on the New Zealand Council, “and unless shipments from Australia arrive in the near future many members will be unable to make Christmas goods for sale to the public." Those present were greatly concerned with the increased costs of manufacture and distribution that the industry was being called upon to bear, I and the association will urge the na-l tional council of the industry lo take immediate steps to obtain relief from these mounting costs. The rationing of several commodities and the supplies of goods under the quota system also came under discussion by the meeting. A motion, of which notice had been given, to change the name of the association to Wanganui-Taranaki Master Bakers and Pastrycooks’ Association was carried. Officers elected were:—President, Mr. G. A. Carter (Stratford); vicepresident. Mr. W. S. N. Rennie (Wanganui): executive, Messrs. R. A. Masters (Stratford), A. H. Yarrow (Manaia). E. C. Nodder (New Plymouth), W. H. S. Newsome (Wanganui), S.
