N.Z. ARMY STAFF GOES TO FAR EAST

RECOVERY AND REPATRIATION OF PRISONERS (P.A.) Parliament Bldgs., Sept. 24. The Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones, said to-night that a small number of Army officers and n.c.o.’s had been sent from New Zealand to join the United Kingdom and Australian staff concerned with lhe recovery and repatriation of Allied prisoners of war and interned civilians in the Far East. The New Zealand staff's duties are primarily to locate and attend to the needs of New Zealanders and other prisoners and internees whose next of kin are at present in New Zealand and to furnish reports giving the names, physical condition and movements of those recovered. They will also gain all possible information about missing New Zealanders. The New Zealand staff members are:— Brigadier G. H. Clifton, who has gone to Manila for duty there, and in Japan; Major A. E. Sanft; Captain .1. C. Young; Lieutenants R. Tapper and R. P. Evans; Warrant Officer A. S. Herick; Sergeants D. Bryce, B. O. Morris, and L. A. Jamieson, all of whom will work in different parts of the South-east Asia area, in co-opera-tion with members of the United Kingdom and Australian staffs. The Now Zealand Army representatives in Malaya will act in conjunction with the R.N.Z.A.F. reception and evacuation centre at Singapore.
