WANGANUI CRICKET

TWO-DAY MATCHES FOR SENIOR TEAMS ASSOCIATION MEETING. By nine votes to three, the Wanganui Cricket Association last night decided to revert to two-day matches in the senior competition. Speaking to a notice of motion advocating two-day cricket, Mr. J. Glover (Wanganui), said he brought the matter forward to give an ’ opportunity for discussion. The only opposition to the proposal came from the Marist Club’s delegates, who said one-day cricket was more interesting than two-day fixtures.

The meeting was presided over by Mr. F. W. Gilligan in the absence of the retiring president, Mr. J. H. Hayhow, who is indisposed. Mr. Gilligan said all were looking forward to a successful season. The game had been kept going during the war period. This was a duty the association had to the men overseas, so that when they retired they could again take up cricket with a minimum of delay. Mr. Gilligan welcomed delegates and said the attendance that night was indication of keen interest for the coming season.

It was agreed that it be a recommendation to the Management Committee that the hours of play be from 1.30 p.m. to 6 p.m. A counter-pro-posal that play be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. was also mentioned. The following delegates were present: Messrs. V. A. Stapleton and H. Hudson (Marist), E. C. Gee and R. I. Sewell (United Old Boys), J. K. Glover and K. Connor (Wanganui), F W. Gilligan and H. E. B. Newton (Collegiate School), G. S. Powell (Technical College). A. McPhail and R. Metekingi (Technical Old Boys), C. Tuffin and C. Ellery (Railways).

New dubs affiliated to the association are United Old Boys (senior) and Railway Cricket Club (junior). Mr. Gilligan welcomed the new club delegates. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr. H. B. Cave; president, Mr. E. H. L. Bernau; immediate past president, Mr. J. H. Hayhow; vicepresidents, Messrs. Dr. F. C. Hutchison, Messrs. G. S. Gordon, R. P. London, D. O. Hales, J. Broad, F. W. Gilligan, I. E. Newton, F E. Smith, G. P. Hawkins, R. I. Sewell, A. N. Cave, J. Dash, J. E. Hamilton; honorary secretary, Mr. K. Connor, honorary treasurer, Mr. J. Glover, honorary auditor, Mr. D. M. Murchie, delegate to New Zealand Cricket Council, Mr D. E. Wanklyn (Christchurch).
