ROWING SEASON

WANGANUI ASSOCIATION JHEETING CHAMPIONSHIP APPLIED FOR The hope that rowing would come into its pre-war prominence was expressed bv the president of the Wanganui Rowing Association, Mr R. J. McDonald at the annual meeting on Thursday. Referring to the possibility of the New Zealand rowing championships being held in. Wanganui, Mr. McDonald said it would mean a big effort for Wanganui. The association would have to call on old rowing friends to assist, ias it had done in the past.

Wanganui has applied for the New Zealand championships, but at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association, about the end of October, it is thought similar applications may be received from other organisations. The Wanganui executive Is to decide a tentative date for the fixture should it be held in Wanganui, and it is thought it will most likely be about February 23 or the first week in March.

A tribute to the work <?f the secretary and treasurer. Mr. W. R. McElwain, who has filled that position while Mr. E. J. Crotty has been overseas, was paid. Mr. McElwain, who had no previous experience of rowing before taking office, helped to keep rowing alive in Wanganui during the war years.

Officers elected were:—Patron. Mr. F. Haywood; vice-patron. Mr. R. J. James; president. Mr. R. J. McDonald; vice-presidents Messrs C. A. Healey, N. G. Armstrong, A. Webster, J. B. F. Cotterill, M.P., L. E. Bridges. C. S. Young. P. Evans. H. Collier (New Plymouth), W. R. Johns (Waitotara), W. L. McAvoy (Dunedin). C. G. Fearon (Manaia); secretary and treasurer, Mr. W. R. McElwain; auditor, Mr. F. Haywood; delegate to N.Z. Amateur Rowing Association, Mr. Spencer Clarke (Wellington).
