TO BE CARED FOR IN NEW ZEALAND
CONALESCING INTERNEES FROM FAR EAST (P.A.) Parliament Bldgs., Sept. 21. “The first shipment containing sick and convalescing internees from the Far East is expected to arrive in New Zealand about October 4, said the Minister of Health, Mr. Nordmeyer, to-day. There would be approximately 400 discharged in New Zealand. No information had yet been received as to the proportion of them requiring hospital attention, or convalescent care. When this information was to hand an allocation would be made to the various hospitals and convalescent establishments. The Minister said it was intended to disembark the first, draft at Auckland, and hospitals in that area wou'd take this number. He understood that rumours concerning the numbers coming to New Zealand had been circulating, and he desired to emphasise that at no time had New Zealand been required to take more than a reasonable number. It was unlikely that more than 800 or 900 would be cared for in New Zealand.
