TROUBLES IN MILAN
EIGHT ALLIED SOLDIERS KILLED BY CIVILIANS U.S. GENERAL’S VISIT POSTPONED Recd. 11 p.m. London, Sept. 9 It is officially stated that armed Italian civilians last week killed eight British soldiers in Milan, mostly during quarrels in bars and restaurants, says the Associated Press Milan correspondent. The disclosure followed an announcement that General Mark Clark’s scheduled visit on Monday to present decorations to 60 Partisans had been postponed "for security reasons.” which is interpreted as meaning that the authorities feared a Partisan gathering would turn into a violent. demonstration.
Gangs of Italian youths are roaming quiet streets and public squares in Rome, stripping and cutting off the hair of Italian girls who go out with Allied soldiers. The gangs are known as lhe "Tosatori” (haircutters). In one incident two girls who were talking to Allied soldiers, were seized, stripped and made to walk naked to the adjoining square. Jeep loads of military police and police dogs arrived and engaged in a pitched battle with the "Tosatori.” One of the gang lost his clothes in a battle with dogs and was taken away. The two girls, still unclothed, vanished into the crowd while the fight was in progress.
