“THEY MUST BE PUNISHED”
Recd. 10 p.m. London, Sept. 10. “If those responsible for ihese outrages are allowed to escape punishment it will be the grossest defeat of justice, and travesty of the principles Tor which the war has been fougnt,” said Dr. Evatt, Australian Minister for External in u statement to the Press on Mr. Justice Webb's report.
Dr. Evait’s statement indicates that, as Lar as Australia is concerned, there will be no soft peace for Japan. Dr. Evatt added that the Australian Government, in its demands tnat all Japanese criminals be brought to trial, was not actuated by a spirit of revenge, but by a profound feeling of justice, and of responsibility, lo ensure that the next generation of Australians is spared the frightful experiences of a kind which Mr. Justice Webb's report reveals. "It is our duly to see that those who organised a system of terrorism, in which all Japanese troops and commanders participated, are punished, and that the system itself is completely eradicated,” said Dr. Evatt. "Those at the top are, in our view, at least equally guilty With the actual perpetrators on the spot.”
